Immortals

Tarsem Singh’s Immortals is yet another “mythology” film that makes use of flashy CGI and…more flashy CGI. The movie hit theatres with all the wonders of 3D and that may well have enhanced what it otherwise a soulless, mediocre experience. Immortals does have some nice visuals and some terrific costume and set design, but there’s little by way of characters to back the play.

The Adventures of Tintin

The Adventures of Tintin is a bold, exciting, colourful film directed by Steven Spielberg, but it seems to lack a certain something all the same. The motion capture animated feature has all the pedigree it needs to be a big hit, with Spielberg in the director’s chair, Peter Jackson serving as producer and John Williams composing the score.

Hugo

Martin Scorsese delivers a dazzling love letter to film, imagination and dreams with 2011’s Hugo. The film was the most nominated picture at the Academy Awards and took home a number of awards, including for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects. It is one of the best films of 2011.

Puss in Boots

As spinoff prequels go, Puss in Boots isn’t too bad. The 2011 film is one of the nominees for Best Animated Feature at the 84th Academy Awards. Directed by Chris Miller, the director of Shrek the Third, the film is quick-witted but suffers from a somewhat convoluted plot and some wonky dance and fight choreography.

The Fast and the Furious

It’s taken me a little while to get going with film reviewing this year for some reason. I don’t really have an explanation for it, but I’m hoping to pick up the pace and hit the gas for more writing in the near future. In that regard, I decided to finally check out The Fast and the Furious. I’ve seen bits and pieces of other films in the series on cable and so on, but I’ve never actually seen the 2001 flick that started it all.
