The purpose of this blog is to share my love of film with anyone and everyone. I try to write in a highly readable style, attempting to avoid cliches and overly-complex writing in favour of a welcoming, accessible style. My goal is not to deliberate in pretentious depth as some bloggers do, but rather to bring the basic style of criticism to an understandable level. Anyone can put on a pseudo-intellectual hat and critique the works of Godard or Ozu or Fellini. My goal is to go beyond that and try to get casual filmgoers, those more acquainted with the works of Michael Bay or Steven Spielberg, to experience a broader framework of film.
In accomplishing this goal, I watch everything and anything that crosses my desk. I receive films from around the world and try to watch them fairly and attentively. There is no genre I refuse, no filmmaker I will not sit through, no performers I won’t subject myself to. Whether built on the performances of Paris Hilton or Mifune, everything gets a fair shake.
I write and am published at Blogcritics primarily, but I have also been published elsewhere. I write music reviews here. Full lists of published reviews and featured excerpts are available upon request.
I try to maintain a distinctly Canadian perspective with my reviews, but sometimes in my haste I merely transfer published reviews directly to this site. Being that most of my reviews are published in the United States or elsewhere, you may notice a lack of proper Canadian spelling on some posts. Please feel free to bring this to my attention.
If you wish to send me film clips or other review materials, please feel free to contact me with a comment on this blog or with an email. I do not respond to personal attacks or otherwise irrelevant commentary and I do promptly delete derogatory comments. In any case, I always enjoy constructive criticism and I will make errors from time to time. Please do not feel discouraged from commenting in general.

Hi ya,
I actually went to the cinema last night (a rarity). I saw ‘The Reader’. It made such a big impression on me that I actually reviewed it and gave it top marks. It’s really quite unlike myself. Wondering if you have seen it yet (I assume you will as it is Oscar nominated) and what you thought of it? I have thought of nothing else all day!
